The connection between cannabis lovers and tattoos is legendary probably because weed and tattoos were such pivotal players in the so-called “counter-culture” revolution of the 60’s and 70’s. In those two decades cannabis played a big part in the counterculture lifestyle which was all about peace and love. It was during these decades that the popularity of cannabis-themed tattoos exploded. It was a whole new world for tattoo artists. Instead of focusing on sailors, bikers, and prisoners, lots of tattoos appearing in the 60’s were all about weed. Tattoos favored by biker gangs were out and art bursting with cannabis leaves and trichomes were in.

The whole “weed and tattoo” scene exploded when the most well known weed museum in the world – Hash Marijhuana & Hemp Museum – located in Amsterdam and Barcelona invested in hosting a prominent exhibit about the connection between cannabis and tattoos. Museum curators collaborated with the authors of the book: Stay Stoned: Madness, Cannabis & Tattoos – a book of stories and photographs about the two subcultures – tattoos and cannabis. It features the work of well known tattoo artists Danny Boy, Jondix, Bill Loika, Robert Ryan and Henk and Morris Schiffmacher.
