Back in February two years ago, the National Football League (NFL) announced they were spending $1 million dollars to fund an investigation on the effects of cannabis on pain management and if it offers neuro-protection from concussions. The goal was to determine whether the cannabis/cannabinoids CBD and THC are effective for pain management so athletes can reduce their use of prescription
medications including opioids. The pressure on the NFL to undertake this study had been building after high-profile players like Rob Gronkoski (pictured above) who credited cannabis with getting back on the field after he was sidelined with injuries. Read Rob’s story on the YourCannaClub website.
“The NFL-NFLPA Joint Pain Management Committee received over 100 proposals from top clinicians and researchers from around the world,” noted Dr. Kevin Hill who serves as Co-Chair of the NFL-NFLPA Joint Pain Management Committee, the Director of Addiction Psychiatry at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the Harvard Medical School.
The encouraging results of this study are clear – medical cannabis can benefit athletes suffering from the acute effects of concussions and are a safe alternative to opioids for pain.
