Even before the Jamaican people decriminalized cannabis, the “Island in the Sun” was known as the number one tourist destination for cannabis lovers. And now that Jamaica has joined most of the rest of the developed world and said no to the useless drug war, cannabis tourism has taken on a whole new dimension.
You can still buy cannabis from locals in the neighborhood but now people can also go to a licensed dispensary if they prefer. In addition, there are lots of new cannabis-oriented resorts and facilities to check out. You might have heard about some of the legendary native strains of cannabis on the island. Lamb’s Bread is one of the more well-known varieties but there are many others.
So, if you have a few minutes, kick back, take a break and check out the Strain Hunters (love these guys) as they tour Jamaica looking for indigenous strains and working out how seeds brought to Jamaica from elsewhere have combined with the native plants and created something entirely new.
Editor’s note: The short-haired guy with the beautiful smile in the video is named Franco Loja. He died a few years back after contracting malaria – ironically while researching the benefits of cannabis for people with malaria.
At one point in the video, Franco turns to a Jamaican grower and says, “It’s the grower, the place and the genetics.” The best teachers use the fewest words.
Franco, in addition to teaching the world more about cannabis and genetics, was generally the kind of guy that just makes the world a much better place. And it always sucks to lose human beings like that.
