There’s lots of stories out there from people who were able to get off the alcohol by getting into “magic mushrooms,” cannabis, and Ketamine. This phenomenon could be changing what it means to be “sober.” In a recent story in The New York Times, written by Ernesto Londono, we learn that younger people are staying clear of alcohol and are opting instead for cannabis, Ketamine and small doses of psychoactive mushrooms. You can read Ernesto’s story here. Dr. Peter Grinspoon, a Harvard-based doctor who’s an expert on the medical benefits of cannabis, said: “The abstinence model is very restrictive. We really have to meet people where they are and have a broader recovery tent.”
These ideas which are still very controversial are shaking up the field of addiction medicine and the long accepted belief that total abstinence is the only way to get people free of drugs.
