Jack Herer (1939- 2010) was affectionately known as the “Emperor of Hemp.” He was an American cannabis rights activist and the author of The Emperor Wears No Clothes, now in its 14th edition after having been continuously in print for 35 years. The book has played an important role in past and ongoing efforts to decriminalize and legalize cannabis and to expand the use of hemp for industrial purposes. All that hard work and commitment has led to a level of recognition and respect from the international cannabis community that very few have earned. The Jack Herer Cup (a competition among growers) is held in Amsterdam, Colombia, Jamaica, Las Vegas, Oklahoma City and Thailand every year. In addition to handing out awards for the best cannabis, the event also promotes and honors the global effort to decriminalize and legalize cannabis for medical and recreational use.
