Yes. Hemp really is stronger than steel. Some experts say it’s 10 times stronger. So in a historical event, the Canadian cannabis company Hempearth has unveiled the world’s first aircraft made entirely from hemp—and powered by it too. USA Today reporter Nick Snedden is covering the story.  “The plan was to construct a four-seater plane made primarily of industrial hemp and powered by hemp biofuel,” Nick tells us. “People that knew about it were excited about the potential of reducing green house gasses and all the other environmental impacts. But there have been funding problems and it’s unclear if the plane has made a successful flight.”

Scientists have known for a long time that hemp is an incredible building material, but hemp being stronger that steel sounds crazy. But it’s not. It turns out for the four-seater pictured here, the entire structure of the aircraft—from the wings and walls to the seats and even the cushions—is made of hemp.
