The New York Times today ran a half page story, written by reporter Alex Williams,  about the death of Tom Shipley who was 84-years-old. Shipley, along with Michael Brewer, wrote one of the most well known weed songs of all time, “One Toke Over the Line.” Known as “Brewer and Shipley” their song “One Toke” came in at #3 on Rolling Stone’s 2020 list of the greatest weed songs ever right after Bob Dylan’s Rainy Day Women and the Beatles’ Got to get You Into My Life.

Alex Willians tells us, “While they became famous for a song so bathed in blue smoke that it almost gave listeners a contact high, Michael Brewer and Mr. Shipley were no novelty act. Veterans of the 1960s folk revival, they released eight albums over a decade starting in 1968. Their music often addressed social issues like civil rights and the Vietnam War.”
