Legendary cannabis researcher, Professor Raphael Mechoulam, often referred to as the “godfather” of cannabis research, celebrated his 90th birthday recently at the 31st International Cannabis Research Symposium (ICRS) in Jerusalem, an annual event he founded. According to a report in the Jerusalem Post written by Idan Zonshine, Professor Mechoulam talked about his six-decades of research beginning with his team’s discovery of cannabinoids in the early 1960’s, the endocannabinoid system in the late 1980s, all the way to his current research on synthesized cannabis acids.

Mechoulam’s team has been busy synthesizing molecules. “We’ve so far developed 14 different molecules, eight of which are completely novel discoveries, meaning that we own a very exclusive patent on them since they are a new discovery to the scientific world,” Mechoulam said. “Each one of those molecules has the potential to be developed into several different medicines.

One recent study revealed that one CBD-derived acid, EPM01, has shown impressive results in battling obesity and metabolic abnormalities in mice. The acid was also effective treating inflammatory colon diseases like ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease using a smaller dose than the steroids presently used for treatment.
