Strip searching great-grandmothers at Disney? You can’t be serious. We always believed that one of the aims of democratic societies is to provide citizens – regardless of wealth or station – access to equal justice under the law. It’s a nice idea but remains a fantasy. In the real world it’s all about who you know and what kind of lawyers you can afford.
Let’s take the cases of Hester Burkhalter, a 69-year-old white woman from Hickory, North Carolina. Burkhalter uses medical cannabis to deal with advanced arthritis. A couple of years ago, she was at Disney World when police separated her from her family and strip searched her after security guards found her CBD oil in her purse. Hopefully this could not happen today, but who knows, She sued the sheriff’s office and Disney World.
