Did you know the suicide rate for white collar workers in the U.S. is highest among doctors? It’s shocking but true. We just learned about that and a lot more listening to the CBC (Canadian Broadcast Company) “Ideas” podcast with Nahlah Ayed. Nahlah interviews Dr. Jillian Horton (pictured here on right) about the extreme burnout impacting our nurses and doctors. In Jillian’s book, We Are All Perfectly Fine: A Memoir of Love, Medicine and Healing, Jillian shares her own personal story of how her job of taking care of sick, suffering people – was often traumatic – a situation made worse by the lack of support and reluctance of people to talk about it.
Some of her discoveries were shocking like the fact that the suicide rate among American doctors is the highest among all white collar workers. Dr. Horton makes a compelling argument that we need to make a more compassionate system that takes better care of our doctors and nurses. And we need to do it now.
