They say the eyes are the window to the soul. In the image above they act as mirrors for the mountains. But they’re also very complicated organs of the visual system that allow us to function effectively in three-dimensional space. Glaucoma is referred to as the ‘sight thief’ because for many people with the disease, it can rob up to 40 percent of their vision before they even notice something’s wrong. The disease is characterized by damage to the nerve connecting the eye to the brain usually due to elevated eye pressure (intraocular pressure.) Clinical studies have found that cannabis reduces intraocular pressure. This occurs whether the cannabis (or medicine containing cannabis) was ingested orally or through smoking or vaporizing. It’s estimated that about 100 million people suffer from this disease, which disproportionately impacts black people almost to the degree as the so-called war on drugs has.
