If you’re having trouble sleeping, you’re not alone. Untold millions of people are tossing and turning keeping their brains from getting the rest they need. This leads to all kinds of serious health issues including anxiety, restlessness and even depression. In these times most of us run to the doctor who ends up prescribing pills which can get you even more screwed up. Last week The New York Times ran a story where sleep experts offered some helpful suggestions on how we can sleep better and give our body and brain the rest it needs without the meds. Read the NYT story HERE.
Some of the suggestions to sleep better include limiting your exposure to “blue-light” emitted by your electronic devices. No blue light an hour before bed. The sleep experts were pretty negative about taking supplements or sleeping pills. They suggest trying certain mental exercises that are relaxing (but sound a little weird) like thinking of a word and then coming up with as many other words that begin with the same letter. Also suggested was to keep a “worry journal” but don’t do it in bed. Evidently getting your concerns on paper helps to escape them. This is also true if your life is getting really complicated. Before you go to bed make a list of all the things you have to do the next day and put them in the order of importance. This does the job of organizing your brain for the next day’s tasks and helps it to shut down so your body can get some rest. But for me and my family and especially my husband who suffered with Parkinsons Disease, what really worked was the RSO cannabis oil. When I noticed the impact the oil was having on him, I decided to take it too. Not only could he sleep through the night, the terrible constipation from all the drugs was gone. The last ten years of his life the oil literally made life worth living. And ten years later I still sleep like a baby every night.
